Chevreul." The plate indicates colors from Chevreul’s "first chromatic circle" along the solar spectrum produced by a carbon disulfide prism. The solid lines bearing letters correspond to the spectral lines mapped by German optician Joseph von Fraunhofer (1787–1826), known as Fraunhofer lines. Chevreul notes that he was only able to distinguish 15 colors from the First Chromatic Circle on the solar spectrum with any exactitude.
