The cuff inflates in time with the pulse picked up by the crystal sensor, and keeps inflating until the momentary systolic pressure is exceeded. While this is happening, it also "bleeds" until the pulse detected by the crystal sensor clears the cuff. The point at which a new inflation begins allows systolic blood pressure to be measured.
