This table was originated by French geologist and mineralogist Alexandre-Émile Béguyer de Chancourtois (1820-1886) in 1863 and classified by chemist Edward G. Mazurs as Type IA1-1 in his seminal work Types of Graphic Representation of the Periodic System of Chemical Elements (1957). Notably, de Chancourtois was the first to arrange the chemical elements in order of their atomic weights. This illustration appears as Figure 21 on page 105 of Mazurs' 1957 publication.
