  <dc:description>Correspondence between Percy Lavon Julian (1899&#x2013;1975) and Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. (1929&#x2013;1968), dating from February 27 to March 8, 1966. King writes to Julian, inviting him to attend the Chicago Freedom Festival on March 12, 1966, as either a sponsor or patron. Julian accepts the invitation and requests that tickets to the event be sent to his home. The correspondence is accompanied by a clipping advertising the Chicago Freedom Festival.

Julian is internationally recognized for his pioneering research in the development of cortisone, sex hormones, soybean proteins, and firefighting foam. Over the course of his career, Julian received more than 130 chemical patents and in 1973, became the second African American, following David Blackwell (1919-2010), to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences.</dc:description>
