00:00:01 All right ready, yes
00:00:03 Helmut I understand that you're having a big birthday very soon
00:00:08 and my purpose here with this message is to wish you a very happy birthday and
00:00:14 A very happy year to follow that
00:00:18 We saw your videotape and you looked very good and your voice sounded good
00:00:25 So I expect that we'll be celebrating many more birthdays with you
00:00:31 you
00:00:33 Probably will have many of your colleagues and friends and former students
00:00:39 Celebrating with you and I hope at that time that everything goes well and that that you do have a good time
00:00:47 There is one person that wants to add his greetings to you and that's Arnold Marguerite
00:00:54 You who you remember very well and
00:00:59 Your visit to our lab in 64 was just a great event for him
00:01:04 He remembers it very clearly and he had the chance to show you the lab
00:01:09 to tell you about his insulin synthesis and
00:01:14 He just it was just probably the best event in his scientific career
00:01:20 Later on, of course when he visited your lab was another important event and
00:01:25 He remembers that
00:01:27 with with great pleasure
00:01:30 so I
00:01:32 Bring you greetings from Arnold Marguerite
00:01:36 This has all
00:01:37 brought to mind
00:01:39 Our various visits and encounters that you and I have had
00:01:45 The first one as far as I know was in 65 when you invited us to Ockham and
00:01:53 Livian I came and because you were the great host and
00:01:58 You showed us around your laboratory and we saw some of your people there
00:02:04 Brandenburg and
00:02:06 Okuda and
00:02:08 Guta and I think shaman is she was there also, but I don't think mine over was
00:02:14 Anyway, that was a great pleasure. And then you put us up in the the wonderful hotel
00:02:20 Spa there in Ockham and that it was an elegant place and then we remember
00:02:27 When you and your wife came over and had breakfast with us the next morning, so it was all very exciting
00:02:34 then we got to see some of the city and
00:02:38 We got to see the Cathedral Charlemagne's Cathedral
00:02:42 And the most interesting structure different from any I'd ever seen before and
00:02:49 We enjoyed that I wanted to tell you
00:02:52 That you and I may be related in some distant way because I learned two years ago
00:03:01 That I have a direct
00:03:04 bloodline connection with Charlemagne
00:03:06 we have a
00:03:09 genealogy that's been worked out and
00:03:11 for
00:03:13 42 generations
00:03:15 down
00:03:16 all the way down to me and to my grandchildren and
00:03:21 went through
00:03:23 from Charlemagne there was Alfred the Great and
00:03:26 a little later William the Conqueror came in went to England and then I
00:03:33 Think it was Henry the first
00:03:35 descended from him and
00:03:37 on down and on down over in the Wales and
00:03:41 finally to America
00:03:44 They came to Pennsylvania then to Kentucky then to Texas where I was born
00:03:49 finally we went to
00:03:53 California then to New York
00:03:55 Where we are now
00:03:56 So maybe you know about some connection with your family and Charlemagne for all I know and I'd like to know about that
00:04:05 So now I need a break guard because I forgot what I was doing
00:04:11 I think the the next time I saw you was in Byron's meeting in Holland and
00:04:17 I remember very well you stood up and made some
00:04:21 Very very nice remarks about solid phase synthesis
00:04:25 That meant a lot to me and I think it helped the cause quite a bit some more people began to
00:04:32 Think that maybe it was a good idea. So your contribution there was was really important to me
00:04:39 Since then we've seen each other in in Paris
00:04:43 in
00:04:45 I guess in Prague we met but these were all short
00:04:49 Encounters and we really haven't seen enough of each other at all
00:04:53 But I guess that's the way it has to be
00:04:57 if you ever do come to New York, then of course, I hope that you will let me know ahead of time and
00:05:03 Maybe we can get together and do something. So finally then
00:05:08 Very happy birthday to you. Bye
