Letter from Max Bredig to Ilse Wolfsberg, October 8, 1941
- 1941-Oct-08
Max Bredig (1902-1977) writes to Ilse Wolfsberg expressing regret for the delay in Fritz Hochwald's (1897-1968) immigration case. He also provides information about his patent application for the direct electrolytic production of permanganates from ferromanganese.

bin ich Ihr ergebener M.A. Bredig

Dear Ms. Wolfsberg,
I’m sorry to learn from your letter from October 7th that the decision in Washington has been postponed again. Let’s now hope that the case will be dealt with soon.
However, I don't think there is much you can do about it independently. Could you perhaps gauge the interest of your chemist acquaintances over there? Below, I have copied the relevant section from Hochwald's letter for you:
1) Mr. Munn let me know in writing that application #203242, which belongs to me, will be granted a patent. It involves the direct electrolytic production of permanganates from ferromanganese etc. The technique was based on a suggestion from the Société des Terres Rares. A.C.C., with whom I had corresponded, was not interested. When the war broke out, negotiations were pending with Aussiger Verein, Rhône …… (illegible) and in the USA, with Caro Chemical (or something like that). The latter wrote that there was not much interest in KMnO4 because in view of local coal prices, alkaline solutions are cheaper than electrolysis. However, this may eventually be interesting for the preparation of NaMnO4. Do you see any prospects? After reading this letter, perhaps you can eventually view Mr. Munn’s files. In the meantime, the technique has slightly improved.
Best regards,
M.A. Bredig
