Lieber Freund Bredig!

Vor etwa 14 Tagen erhielt ich Deinen lieben Brief nebst dem Bierdrama und sage ich meinen und der Studenten besten Dank fuer alle beide. Das Bierdrama habe ich durch Hrn. Nannes, der jetzt Klubbmeister des Vereines ist, den Studenten überlassen, so viel ich weiss hat sich ein Komitee eingesteht um das Produkt für schwedische Verhältnisse umzukampeln. Wie es ihnen gelingt, weiss ich nicht.

Ich vermute, ich schrieb voriges Mal über Rothmund, von dem ich damals einen Brief neulich gehabt hatte. Von Hanusch kann ich nur so viel erzählen, dass er in Karlsruhe ist (Durlacher-Allee No. 24) und seine Ziffern von hier bearbeitet, dass es aber die Abhandlung noch lange nicht fertig hat. Vielleicht hat man das Geduld verloren und beschlossen einen

anderen Elektriker nachzufragen. Ich meine, es wäre nicht unklug von Dir etwas anderes als Leipzig einmal anzunehmen, denn da scheint man wirklich grosse Forderungen zu haben. Und was ist es übrigens mit dem Avancement in L. Gewiss ist es sehr nützlich bei Ostwald zu sein und an der Leitung des grössten Fachlaboratoriums teilzunehmen, aber um Gottes willen, damit kann man doch auf die Dauer nicht befriedigt sein.

Ich habe neuerdings das erste Heft vom dritten Bande des grossen Ostwalds in die Hände bekommen und etwas darin geblättert; ich kann ja offenbar sehr damit zufrieden sein, aber warum dieser ewige Streit gegen die Kinetik. Hat die Kinetik mal zu Entdeckungen verholfen, welche später einwurfsfreiere Beweise von der mechanischen Wärmtheorie erhalten, so ist es doch ein kolossales Verdienst der Kinetik als Pfadfinder gedient zu haben. Und die Energetik hat gewiss nie das geleistet. Man muss den

alten Sprich „Leben und leben lassen“ in dem Fall gelten lassen. Die ganze Sache von der Elektrolyte ist doch absolut kinetisch und die Energetik würde nur da verdammt wenig Hilfen leisten können.

Vor 3 Wochen war es hier Rectorswahl an der Stockholms Hochschule. Petersson hatte als Rektor schon vier Jahre gedient, und die Statuten erlauben, dass man sich dann frei von dem Amte sagt. Nun konnten wir natürlich nicht den bösen Gegnern die Macht lassen, denn sie würden dieselbe entschieden missbrauchen. Also waren Bjerknes, Lagerheim und ich möglich als Candidate der Majorität. Högborn geht etwa Mitte Januar nach Upsala, und so hat man mich erwählen müssen. Nun hoffentlich geht es, Zauberstücke werde ich wohl nicht vorführen können, aber das wird nun ja auch nicht verlangen.

Dabei debütiere ich als Rektor und Bjerknes wird den gewöhnlichen populären Vortag halten (über Hydrodynamik). Bei der zweiten Gelegenheit wird eine Bearbeitung Deines Bier-Dramas vom Stapel laufen und ich werde wohl ein Hoch für den lieben Verfasser ausbringen.

Und dann wird es getanzt und gescherzt. In diesem Jahr war ich nicht dabei, aber im nächsten kann ich es nicht entgehen. Nun einmal tanzen und scherzen (besonders mit netten Mädchen) hin und wieder, ist sehr gesund. Ich werde zwei solche Gelegenheiten in Bälde haben, [wenn] meine lieben Freunde Larssen und Forsling nächstens in Stockholm heiraten, jener am 29 Dec., dieser am 6 Jan. Rindell reiste vor einer Woche zu seiner Familie; ich folgte ihm aufs Schiff und wäre beinahe mitgereist; habe mich jedoch im letzten Moment auf die Ufer gerettet.

My dear friend Bredig,

Approximately two weeks ago, I received your nice letter along with the Bier drama. My students I thank you for both of them. I gave the Bier drama to the students through Mr. Nannes, who is now the leader of the association. As far as I know, a committee has decided to revamp the drama for Swedish culture. I don't know if they’ll be successful.

I suppose I wrote to you last time about Rothmund, from whom I received a letter the other day. I can only say so much about Hanusch. He is in Karlsruhe (Durlacher-Allee No. 24) and is proofreading his work from there. However, the treatise is far from finished. Maybe you lost your patience and

decided to ask another electrician. I mean, it wouldn't be unwise for you to accept something other than Leipzig because they seem to have really big demands there. By the way, what’s happening with your promotion in Leipzig? Certainly, it is very useful to work with Ostwald and to participate in the management of the largest specialist laboratory. Yet, for God’s sake, you cannot be satisfied with that in the long run.

I recently got my hands on the first issue of Ostwald’s third volume and leafed through it a bit. I can obviously be very content with it, but I don’t understand this eternal argument against kinetics. If kinetics once helped with discoveries that later led to unobjectionable proof of the mechanical theory of heat, kinetics should be considered pioneering. Energetics certainly never did that.

The old adage “live and let live” has to apply in this case. Electrolytes are absolutely kinetic in nature and the energetics would only be of little use there.

Three weeks ago, we had the election for the rector at Stockholm University. Petersson already served as rector for four years, and the statutes allow him to then resign from office. Now, of course, we could not allow our evil opponents to amass power, because they would definitely abuse it. Hence, Bjerknes, Lagerheim, and I were slated as possible candidates for the majority. Högborn will travel to Upsala in mid-January, and so they had to choose me. Well, hopefully it will work. I probably won't be able to perform magic tricks, but that won't be required.

At the beginning of February, the university’s convocation and the foundation festival will take place.

I will make my debut as rector and Bjerknes will give his usual popular lecture (about hydrodynamics). On the second occasion, an adaptation of your Bier drama will debut, and I shall congratulate the dear author.

Afterwards, we will dance and have fun. I wasn’t there this past year, but I can't miss it next year. Now, dancing (especially with nice girls) and having fun every now and then is very healthy. I shall have two such opportunities in the near future [when] my dear friends Larssen and Forsling will soon wed in Stockholm, one on December 26th and the other on January 6th. Rindell departed a week ago to see his family. I accompanied him onto the ship and almost went with him. However, I disembarked at the last minute.
