Mein lieber Max-Albert!

Besten Dank für Deinen Brief vom 27 d.M. u. die Einlage mit der Auskunft von Erich G. – Ich schreibe Dir deshalb umgehend, weil ich entsetzt bin über Deine verrückten Absichten mit der Winterhilfe. Du hast wohl Grössenwahn! Ich mit meinem wahrhaftig nicht geringen Gemeinsinn u. sehr erheblich grösseren Einkommen werde zur jüdische Winterhilfe (die andere kommt für mich satzungsgemäss nicht mehr in Betracht) genau das geben, was durchaus auch in der anderen Winterhilfe als massgeblich vorgeschlagen ist u. auch bei der jüdische Winterhilfe als richtig angesehen wird, nämlich: ich gebe (vergl belieg. Zeitungsausschnitt) monatlich 10% wieder monatlich Lohnsteuer also 10% von 108,42 R.M. = 10.84 und 3% Überschusses meiner Einkommensteuer für 1934 über meine Vorauszahlungen beziehungsweise Lohnsteuerzahlungen also 3% von 1125 M jährlich = monatlich 33.75, also insgesamt 6 Monate lang monatlich 44.59. Ich werde also monatlich rund 45 R.M. geben. Das ist sehr viel und sogar als sachverständiges Mitglied der hiesigen Gemeinde, der meine Verhältnisse genau kennt,

hatte zuerst nur einen Beitrag von 33 R.M. monatlich von mir als durchaus anständig bezeichnet. Vielleicht runde ich meinen monatlichen Beitrag auf 50 R.M. ab, d.h. ich bestimme noch 5 M. extra zu den 45 für Nichtarier, die nicht Volljuden u. nicht konfessionell jüdisch sind oder ähnlich gelagerte Fälle. –

Es wäre also mein Beitrag für diesen Winter insgesamt 300 R.M. u. ist m.E. sehr anständig.

Wenn Du halb so viel wie ich giebst, so ist das für Deine Verhältnisse schon sehr reichlich u. ich wäre ernstlich böse, wenn Du so protzig (es giebt auch ein moralisches Protzentum) wärest, mehr zu geben als 25 M. monatlich. Du wirst es noch sehr merken, wie sehr wir Veranlassung haben, unsere Mittel zusammen zu halten. Wenn Du schon Gutes thun willst, so haben wir wahrhaftig uns näher stehende Kreise, die es brauchen können oder vielleicht bald werden! Also spare Deine Kräfte für diese!! Mit 25 M. monatlich giebst Du ja schon einen viel grösseren Bruchteil Deiner Einkommen fort, als viele Andere. Deine heutigen fantastischen Vorschläge reizen mich fort, Dich unter Curatel stellen zu lassen. Du pochst u protzest mit einem Reichtum, der ganz illusorisch ist. Denken lieber an die Zukunft Deiner noch erwerbslosen Schwester!

Die jüdische Gemeindesteuer als Konfessionsloser zu Grunde zu legen u. noch dazu die luxuriöse ist für uns Unsinn.

Ich sandte Dir heute dank Tante Kaethes u. Thereses mühsamer Bestätigung wieder als Päckchen 1 ½ Pfund Butter. Es wir aber jetzt auch hier sehr knapp. Ich denke schon daran, dass Du Dir ev. aus Holland bei Freunden oder Bekannten solche wöchentlich oder 14 tägig schicken lassen könntest entweder geschenkweise (mit Aussicht auf spätere Revanche) oder mit der erlaubten Bezahlung (unter Eintragung in Pass) von monatlich 10 R.M. – Du oder ich könnten ja ev. Ernst C in Utrecht darum bitten. – Ich denke das Gleiche für Tante Kaethe bei Gustav zu erbitten, denn seine Mutter kann die Butter auch sehr schlecht entbehren, da sie ja zuckerkrank ist. – Erlaubt ist das oben Gesagte durchaus u. entlastet ja sogar den Deutschen Markt, da ja geschenkterweise gar keine bei 10 R.M.

monatlich nur die ohnehin erlaubte Gelddevise pro Person in’s Ausland geht. Ich habe mich soeben darüber am hiesigen Zollamt erkundigt. Allerdings kommt durch den Zoll (0.85 M) u. einige andere Zuschläge pro kg. die Sache etwas teuer. – Vorbedingung aber ist dass man einen Antrag um „Erlaubnisformular“ für die Einfuhr monatlich (circa f. 10 kg monatlich) bei der „Reichstelle für Milcherzeugnisse, Oele u. Fette“ in Berlin S.W. 68 Lindenstr. 28. stellt u. den Schein (am besten mit ärztlicher Begründung) dann ausgefüllt nach Holland an den Absender schickt. Man kann z.B. 10 kg im Monat dann auch in wöchentlich oder 14 tägige Raten beziehen. Hänge die Sache aber nicht bei allen Bekannten an die grosse Glocke, sonst giebt es wohl bald Missbrauch u. Hindernisse.

Näheres von Dir u. hoffentlich Gutes wird mir wohl Marianne, die ich Mittwoch oder Donnerstagabend hier erwarte, erzählen.

Many thanks for your letter from October 27th, and the enclosure with the information from Erich G. I am writing to you immediately because I am appalled at your absurd intentions regarding the winter relief fund. You must have delusions of grandeur! With my sense of community and much higher income, I will donate to the Jewish winter relief fund (the other one is no longer an option for me according to the statutes) exactly what is proposed for the other winter relief fund as a sufficient amount, and also what the Jewish winter relief fund considers proper. Essentially, I will give (see the enclosed newspaper excerpt) 10% of my monthly income tax again, i.e. 10% of 1,08.42 Reichsmarks, which equals 10.84 Reichsmarks. I will also give 3% in excess of my income tax for 1934 concerning my advance payments and income tax payments, i.e. 3% of 1,125 Reichsmarks annually. This is equivalent to 33.75 Reichsmarks per month, i.e. 44.59 Reichsmarks monthly for a total of 6 months. Hence, I will give around 45 Reichsmarks per month. That’s a lot and even as a knowledgeable member of the local community who knows my circumstances very well,

I consider a donation of 33 Reichsmarks per month to be quite decent. Maybe I’ll round up my monthly donation to 50 Reichsmarks. This means that I will add 5 Reichsmarks extra to the 45 Reichsmarks for non-Aryans who are not fully Jewish, not religiously Jewish, or for other similar cases.

Hence, my donation for this winter would be a total of 300 Reichsmarks and in my opinion, this is very decent.

If you donate half as much as I do, that is already very generous for your circumstances and I would be seriously angry if you were so arrogant (there is also a moral arrogance) to give more than 25 Reichsmarks per month. You will realize why we have to save our money. If you really want to do good, we have networks closer to us that can use money or perhaps will need it soon! Save your energy for this! With 25 Reichsmarks per month, you are giving away a much larger percentage of your income than many others. Today’s fantastic suggestions tempt me to put you under a guardianship. Showing off your wealth is utterly deceptive! You better think about the future and your currently unemployed sister!

As non-religious citizens, paying the Jewish community tax or wanting to do so is nonsense for us.
Thanks to Aunt Kaethe's and Therese's painstaking reports, I sent you another 1 ½ pound of butter in a small package today. It’s sparse here too. I think you could possibly have friends or acquaintances from Holland send items weekly or every two weeks either as a gift (with the prospect of revenge at a later time) or as a permitted pre-paid package in the amount of 10 Reichsmarks (with entry in the passport). You or I could possibly ask Ernst Cohen in Utrecht about it. I think I should ask Gustave about the same thing for Aunt Kaethe. His mother can hardly do without the butter either, especially since she is diabetic. What I just mentioned is allowed and even unburdens the German market,

especially since none of the monthly 10 Reichsmarks, which is allowed per person, goes abroad. I just inquired about this at the local customs office. However, due to the customs fee (0.85 Reichsmarks) and some other surcharges per kilogram, things are a bit expensive. The prerequisite, however, is that you submit an application to the “Reich Office for Milk Products, Oils, and Fats” in Berlin for a “permission form” for importing goods monthly (about 10 kg per month). The office is located at S.W. 68 Lindenstrasse 28. Moreover, you should fill out the form (preferably with a doctor’s justification) and mail it to the sender in Holland. For example, you can purchase 10 kilograms per month in weekly or two-week installments. However, don’t announce this information to everyone you know. Otherwise, there will soon be misuse and obstacles.

Marianne, whom I’m expecting here on Wednesday or Thursday evening, will tell me more about you. Hopefully, it will be good news.
