His father, Carl Lintner (1828-1900), was also a brewing scientist who founded the Scientific Station for Brewing in Munich and started the magazine Bayerische Bierbrauer (Bavarian Brewers). Karl Josef Lintner taught at Technische Universität München (Technical University of Munich) and was the rector from 1915-1917. In America, a Lintner or Degrees Lintner is a measurement of a malt's diastatic power, or its ability to reduce starch to sugar.
