Portrait of Marcellin Berthelot (1827-1907). Berthelot was a French chemist, historian, and politician. His work in chemistry focused on organic synthesis and thermochemistry.

The photographer, Henri Manuel (1874-1947), was a French photographer known for his portraits of famous Parisians. The studio, which he opened with his brother, became one of the largest photography studios in Paris.
