Notebook kept by Robert Bruce Merrifield. It is numbered "321" on the front cover. The notebook covers the period from May 26, 1959 through January 25, 1960 and sets out Merrifield's general conception of solid phase peptide synthesis.
Robert Bruce Merrifield was born in Fort Worth, TX on July 15, 1921. He attended UCLA and in 1949 accepted a position at Rockefeller Institute (later University) in New York City. In 1959 he conceived the idea for solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS), and recorded the idea in this notebook. In 1963, he authored a paper in the Journal of the American Chemical Society in which he reported a method he called "solid phase peptide synthesis." This work led to a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1984. Merrifield died in Cresskill, NJ on May 14, 2006.
