1959 postage stamp from Yugoslavia featuring an illustration of alder buckthorn (Rhamnus frangula). Its bark has a variety of uses. As early as the 2nd century AD, buckthorn was believed to protect against witchcraft, demons, and other forms of folk magic. The bark has also been used as a strong herbal laxative.
