00:00:00 Chemical Heritage Foundation, a commitment to treasuring the past, educating the present, inspiring the future.
00:00:23 The Chemical Heritage Foundation really is an outstanding resource for all historians of chemistry, regardless of their time periods of interest.
00:00:31 Previously here I worked on the Edelman Collection and Fisher Collections of Alchemy and Art, which is another remarkable collection that's here.
00:00:39 And then there's also the Instrument Collection.
00:00:43 Treasuring the Past.
00:00:46 The acquisition of the Neville Collection by the Chemical Heritage Foundation will transform the Foundation into a major destination for historians of chemistry.
00:00:56 Consisting of about 5,000 to 6,000 works in the history of chemistry.
00:01:01 Textbooks dating back to the 17th century, down to the end of the 19th century.
00:01:06 Doctoral dissertations from that period.
00:01:09 Important gems that were great landmarks when they were first published.
00:01:13 Once you start putting all these various collections together, you have an absolutely unique resource for historians of chemistry here in Philadelphia.
00:01:22 We have almost 96,000 volumes of materials, 69,000 of those journals.
00:01:29 The rest are monographs, treatises, and corporate histories.
00:01:34 Yes, the Neville Collection.
00:01:36 This is treasures.
00:01:38 The leather, the vellum, the bindings are magnificent.
00:01:42 Our primary users are our resident scholars and visiting scholars.
00:01:47 But we do get quite a bit of traffic virtually off the internet.
00:01:52 From as far away as Australia, Europe, Japan.
00:02:09 Educating the present.
00:02:20 In the exhibit there are 65 famous historical women chemists.
00:02:25 In the food industry, women have been very fundamental.
00:02:29 In the cosmetic industry, they have done some of the primary work in curing AIDS.
00:02:36 And in medicine, it was a woman who actually developed the first manufacturing plant for penicillin.
00:02:44 The idea was really conceived at the Chemical Heritage Foundation.
00:02:48 It was carried out by the very capable staff here.
00:02:52 And so in a way, we were just some of the money in the background.
00:02:56 Except we had great interest in what is happening to women in chemistry.
00:03:03 Here is the one group who is actually taking the history of chemistry
00:03:07 and bringing it to a true international level
00:03:10 and supporting the story of the contribution of the chemical and molecular sciences.
00:03:16 That's not being done anywhere else.
00:03:18 There is no equivalent of this in Europe.
00:03:20 So this is the largest association or largest group, foundation, serving chemistry history.
00:03:28 Inspiring the Future
