The Beckman CPE was developed in 1967 by the Advanced Technology Operations (ATO) division for use by the United States Army in detecting particles found in bacteriologic warfare applications. In producing this system for the Army, Beckman Instruments also created a commercial version of the CPE, manufactured by their Scientific Instrument Division. It is unclear which instrument is shown in this photograph.
