Herman Francis Mark (1895-1992) was an Austrian chemist known for his contributions to polymer science, X-ray diffraction, and his work at IG Farben. In 1938 Mark started preparing to leave Austria. He was unable to make it out of the country before Hitler invaded Austria and was sent to a Gestapo prison. After his release, he was able to immigrate to America by first entering Canada. He continued his research in polymers in Brooklyn, New York.

Ich danke Dir herzlich für Deine lieben Zeilen vom 16. Mai und mache Dich auf den Punkt aufmerksam, welchen Du nach dem Inhalt desselben nicht erwogen hast. Herr Dr. Mark ist ganz offenbar jetzt in diesem Augenblicke damit beschäftigt sich den Kreis der Mitarbeiter zusammenzustellen. Infolgedessen besteht eben in diesem Augenblicke sein Interesse und deine bezügliche Chance. Wenn Du Dich nicht entschliesst, so wird er einen anderen nehmen, und wenn er einen anderen nimmt, so wird zwar Deine Chance nicht Null, weil ja wieder eine Lücke eintreten kann, aber die Wahrscheinlichkeit wird natürlich viel ungünstiger. Darum musst Du die Sachen so ansehen, dass es sich um etwas wichtiges handelt.
Ich danke Dir herzlich für Deine Bemühung um meinen Neffen, und ich beglückwünsche Dich, dass Du bei Herrn POHL etwas erfolgreiches zu Wee bringst.

Thank you very much for your kind letter from May 16th. Based on its content, please draw your attention again to the matter that you did not consider. Presently, Dr. Mark is obviously busy putting together a group of employees. Hence, at this very moment he is interested in you and you have a chance. If you don't make up your mind, he will employ someone else. If he employs someone else, your chances won't be zero because an opening can occur again. However, your odds will then certainly be less favorable. For this reason, you must view this as important.
Thank you very much for your efforts to help my nephew and congratulations on your successful work with Mr. Pohl.
