General view of British physiologist Sir Joseph Barcroft (1872-1947) examining a pumping apparatus in a laboratory at Cambridge University. A Fellow of the Royal Society, Sir Barcroft held the chair of physiology at Cambridge University from 1925 to 1937 and is best known for his work on the respiratory function of the blood and the functions of the spleen.
