Lieber Freund! Verzeihe, wenn ich Dir heute zu Deinem Geburtstagtage nicht handschriflich, sondern nur nach Diktat mit Maschinenschrift gratulieren kann. Ich liege aber seit mehreren Woche stocksteif an Ischias zu Bett, die recht schwer ist und mich an jeder Tätigkeit hindert. Hoffentlich geht es Dir und Deiner Familie gut. Ich danke Dir sehr für Deine neuliche Karte. Wir haben keine leichten Zeit durchzumachen. Ich habe auch verdoppelte Arbeit gehabt, da ich auch noch einen Kollegen in der grossen Vorlesung über anorganische Chemie vertreten musste und ausserdem noch Mitglied des Senats bin. Leider zwingt mich jetzt die Krankheit, diese Pflichten zu versäumen. – Im vergangenen Sommer bin ich meinen Kindern mit knapper Not dem grossen Kindermord entgangen, den feindliche

Flieger an einem Feiertag hier in Karlsruhe verübt zu haben. Du hast vielleicht in den Zeitungen davon gelesen, dass dabei über 80 Kinder getötet und ewas ebensoviel verwundet wurden. Ich habe nicht gehört, dass neutrale Kulturträger auch dagegen protestiert haben.

Dear Friend, Forgive me if I cannot congratulate you on your birthday today by handwritten letter, but rather by typed dictation. For several weeks, I have been laid up with sciatica, which is quite difficult and prevents me from doing anything. Hopefully, you and your family are doing well. Many thanks for your recent card. We are not living in easy times. I also had a double work load. I had to hold lectures for a colleague in inorganic chemistry and am also a member of the University Senate. Unfortunately, this illness now forces me to neglect these duties. Last summer, I narrowly escaped

the enemy plan attack on Karlsruhe, which killed several children on a holiday. You may have read in the newspapers that over 80 children were killed and just as many were wounded. I have unfortunately not heard that the neutral cultural outlets protested against it.
