Lorentz was a Dutch physicist. In 1902, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics with Pieter Zeeman (1865-1943) for their discovery of the Zeeman effect. The Zeeman effect occurs when a spectral line is split into several components in the presence of a static magnetic field. In 1908, Lorentz became a full professor in the physics department of the Physics Institute in Amersterdam.
