Meine Lieben!

Vielen Dank für Euere Briefe Mx 81/82 und A 15. Ich hoffe Ihr habt inzwischen auch meine Briefe vom 16. und 23. Febr. mit den Certifikaten bekommen. Ich sende heute auch die unterschriebene Vollmacht an die Deutsche Bank. Viel ist ja dort, weiss Gott, nicht zu verwalten.

Es tut mir sehr leid, dass Ihr solche Schwierigkeiten habt am Am. Consulat. Unter den besonderen Umständen dort würde sicherlich auch eine gewisse Beziehung, die ich hier durch gute Bekannte, Amerikaner, dorthin habe, auch nicht helfen? Sondern die überlasteten Beamten vielleicht eher verärgern!?

Dieser Tage erhielt ich einen sehr empörten Brief von Frau Faj.. Obwohl sie durchaus versteht, dass Bedenken gegen mein Aff. Für Gebhardts bestehen, und diese mich keineswegs veranlassen will, es zu geben, so ist sie entrüstet darüber, dass Ihr anscheinend Gebhards meine Adresse vorenthalten habt und damit auch andere Hilfeleistung wie Bemühung um ein anderes Affidavit oder Stipendium oder dergl. durch mich unterbinden wolltet, um mir Mühe zu ersparen. Ich weiss nicht, ob hier nicht irgendwo ein Missverständnis vorliegt, sonst würde ich ihre ernstliche Entrüstung nicht unberechtigt finden, da doch wirklich jeder jedem so sehr helfen muss, als irgend möglich z.Zt.. Und wenn nicht finanzielle, so in anderer Weise! Auch wenn ich für G.s. kein Aff. gebe, was ich wohl wirklich nicht tun kann, so bin ich doch natürlich bereit, an Möglichkeiten für Werner zu denken, um mich für ihn zu erkundigen, wenn ich dazu Gelegenheit habe, was ja allerdings augenblicklich in meinem Zigeunerleben nicht leicht der Fall sein wird.

Was eben dieses Zigeunerleben betrifft, so habe ich vorgestern mit meinem Chef verabredet, dass ich wohl ab ca 20. März mein Hauptquartier nach New York, Graybar Building, Lexington ave, c/o Vanadium Corporation of America verlegen werde. Er wird mich dann wohl bald mit auf einige seiner Reisen nehmen, und Anfang April werde ich auch eine Woche in Baltimore bei der Chemiker-Tagung sein. Man schien mit meiner bisherigen Litteratur-Arbeit zufrieden. Ich bin noch nicht sicher, ob ich mit dieser Stellung an den richtigen Platz geraten bin, aber sicher lerne ich menschlich sehr viel dabei, verdiene viel Geld, lerne viele Menschen kennen, habe angenehme Vorgesetzte und Collegen, und schliesslich kann ja noch eine mehr chemische Tätigkeit durch Leitung des sich aus meinen Reisen entwicklenden-oder besser: zu entwickelnden-research sich ergeben! Mein Chef versucht jedenfalls immer mir diese Entwicklungsmöglichkeiten in den glühendsten Farben zu schildern, vermutlich um mein Interesse immer noch mehr anzuregen.

Was machen die Buben? Haben sie irgend einen Unterricht? Lernen sie fleissig englisch? Gruesst sie und alle Verwandten und Freunde vielmals und seid selbst herzlich gegrüsst von Euerem Max.

Thank you for your letters Mx 81/82 and A 15. In the meantime, I hope you have also received my letters from February 16th and 23th with the certificates. I am also sending the signed power of attorney to Deutsche Bank today. Lord knows there is not much to manage there!

I’m very sorry that you’re having such difficulties at the American consulate. Under the challenging circumstances there, I would think that my relationship with well-known American acquaintances would help. Do you think this would instead annoy the overburdened officials? Recently, I received a very indignant letter from Mrs. Fajans. Although she understands that there are concerns regarding an affidavit for the Gebhardt family, and that it is impossible to convince me to provide them with one, she is angry that you all apparently withheld my address from them. She believes that you wanted to save me the trouble of helping through other means, such as procuring another affidavit or scholarship for them. I don’t know if there is a misunderstanding there, otherwise I wouldn’t find her resentment unjustified, especially since help is needed all around these days. If not financially, then in a different way! Even if I don't provide an affidavit for the Gebhardts, which I really can't do, I am of course ready to think of ways to help Werner explore opportunities. This is not easy, especially given my nomadic lifestyle.

As far as my nomadic lifestyle is concerned, the day before yesterday, I arranged with my boss to move my office to the following address in New York City around March 20th : Vanadium Corporation of America, Graybar Building, Lexington Ave. He'll probably take me along on some of his trips soon. I'll be in Baltimore for a chemistry conference in early April for one week. Everyone seems satisfied with my publications so far. I’m not yet sure if this is the right position for me. However, I’m certain that I’ll learn a lot, earn a lot of money, get to know a lot of people, and have pleasant superiors and colleagues. Moreover, I can finally work as a research manager in the field of chemistry, which is complimented by trips for professional development. Only time will tell! In any case, my boss always tries to describe these professional development opportunities to me in the most glowing terms, presumably to peek my interest even more.

What are the boys doing? Are they in school? Are they learning English fluently? Hello to them and of our relatives and friends.
