Hiermit übersende ich Dir die Ausrechnung der Steuerwerte Deiner hiesigen Effecten durch das hiesige Bankhaus Straus & Co. für Dein bei ihm hier liegendes Depot. Du musst jetzt eine Erklärung zur Vermögenssteuer (ausser der Einkommenssteuererklärung) bis spätestens 28 Febr. beim Charlottenburger Finanzamt einreichen. Von Diesem kannst Du wohl auch das dazu nötige Formular (hier in Karlsruhe ist es grün u. hat die Bezeichnung Vm. 1 (1935)) erhalten, am besten in 2 Exemplaren, von dem Du eines als Concept bzw. Copie ausgefüllt zurückbehalten musst.

In diesem Formular hättest Du z.B. auf S.3 unter IV in Spalte 1 einzutragen „vergl. beigefügten Bankauszug“ und ferner: (wie ich mit Bleistift im Duplikat vermerkt habe) in dieselbe Rubrik in der nächsten Zeile: 1000 R.M. 6% Deutsche Reichsschuldbuchforderung…956 R.M.

Auf S.4.c: Deine Sparkassenbuchbetrag in Karlsruhe und Dein Guthaben bei der Deutschen Bank in Charlottenburg

Auf S.4.e: Deine Allianz-Providentia-Police, deren Rückkaufwert (nach meiner Erkundigung bei Allianz) mit 70% R.M. also zu 353 einzutragen ist. Vergl. meine Bleistiftnotiz auf „Duplicat“ sowie die dem Formular beigelegte gedruckte „Anleitung.“

Du wirst vielleicht gut thun, auf dem Formular noch zu bemerken, dass Du erst seit ¾ Jahren(mit Ausnahme von ca. 50000 R.M.) durch Erbteilung in Besitz und Genuss des ganzen angegebenen Vermögens gekommen bist u. dass ich für das gesamte Vermögen (aus dem es stammt) die Vermögenssteuer noch einschliesslich der Reste f. 15. Febr. 35. hier laut Bescheid des Finanzamtes Karlsruhe-Stadt zu zahlen hatte (Bescheid des Finanzamtes Karlsruhe-Stadt. Geschäftszeichen Vd. vom 2 Aug. 1935 (Da „die ursprüngliche Veranlagung“ bis zum 31. 3. 1935 hier für das ganze noch ungeteilte Vermögen in Kraft blieb).

Bei Dir ist „Neuveranlagung“ vorzunehmen, die dann „für die Zeit vom 1.4.1935“ ab gilt. Ich sende Dir diesen Bescheid vom 2 Aug. 1935 Klrh hiermit ein. Nimm Dir Abschrift zur ev. Verwertung davon u. sende mir diesen Bescheid baldigst zurück. Die Erbschaftsteuer habe ich

bekanntlich schon hier in Karlsruhe für Dich bezahlt, leider zu früh, da sie später ev. ganz weggefallen wäre nach den neuen Bestimmungen.

Für die Einkommenssteuererklärung zum Kapital „Einkünfte aus Kapitalvermögen“ sandte ich Dir mein hiesiges Kontobuch, das ich für Deine Vermögensverwaltung führe. Ich habe es noch nicht von Dir zurückerhalten u. bitte darum. – Deine beruflichen Einkünfte etc. musst Du in Berlin selber ermitteln u. einsetzen. Eine Lohnsteuer u. sonstige Abzugsbescheinigung bekommst Du wohl diesmal noch nicht von Deiner Firma als Arbeitgeberin, da Du bis 1 Jan. 1935 wohl keine Lohnsteuer etc. durch die Firma zu zahlen hattest, sondern 1934 vermutlich als „im freien Berufe“ befindlich betrachtet wurdest? –

Wie steht es mit Deiner Steuerkarte? Die geht doch von jetzt an wieder über Deine Firma als „Arbeitgeber.“

Falls Du das auf beiliegender blaugrünen Karte von Verlag Steinkopff angebotene Buch über Röntgenoskopie von dispersen Systemen brauchst, bin ich bereit, Dir dasselbe als Mitglied der Kolloidgesellschaft, der ich angehöre, zu besorgen.

Ebert erzählte mir, dass er zwar nach Berlin gereist war, um der H. Trauerfeier beizuwohnen, aber bei Bodenstein erfuhr, dass die Teilnahme den Mitgliedern des Verein D. Chemiker untersagt sei. Daraufhin sagte Bod., es sei also nicht möglich u. die Anderen ging deshalb nicht hin. Das Verbot wurde also rasch bekannt gemacht, due Milderung jedoch nicht. „There is a method (in my madness)“, wie immer. Herr Streicher ist ja jetzt auch von Goebels als „Vorbild“ in Leidenschaft durch Geburtstagstelegramm erklärt worden.

Dear Max,

Enclosed, I am sending you the tax calculation for your stocks deposited here at the local bank, Straus & Co. You now must submit a wealth tax return (apart from the income tax return) to the Charlottenburg tax office by February 28th at the latest. You can probably also obtain the necessary form from them (here in Karlsruhe it is green and has the designation Vm. 1 (1935)). Preferably, you should have two copies and keep one for yourself.

On this form, for example, you would have to write on page 3 (under section IV in column 1) “see attached bank statement.” Further (as I wrote in pencil on the duplicate copy), write in the same column on the next line: 1,000 Reichsmarks, 6% German Reich debt register claim, 956 Reichsmarks.

On page 4c: Your savings account balance in Karlsruhe and your balance at Deutsche Bank in Charlottenburg

On page 4e: Your Allianz Providentia policy, whose surrender value (according to my inquiries at Allianz) is 70% of its value in Reichsmarks. 353 should be entered. See my note in pencil on the “duplicate” and the printed “instructions” accompanying the form.

Perhaps you should note on the form that you have only been in possession and enjoyment of the entire specified property for three quarters of a year (except for approximately 50,000 Reichsmarks) through inheritance. Moreover, according to the decision of the Karlsruhe municipal tax office, I am responsible for paying the property tax (including the residuals for February 15, 1935) (reference number Vd. from August 2, 1935), especially since the “the original assessment” remained in force here for the entire undivided property until March 31, 1935.

You must do a “reassessment,” which then applies “for the period from April 1, 1935.” I am sending you this notification from Karlsruhe on August 2, 1935. Make a copy of it for possible use and return it to me as soon as possible.

As you know, I have already paid the inheritance tax for you here in Karlsruhe. Unfortunately, I paid this too early, as it might have later been eliminated entirely under the new regulations.

For the income tax return on “capital assets,” I sent you my account book, which I keep for managing your assets. I have not yet received it back from you and am requesting it again. You must determine and complete your individual income taxes in Berlin. You will likely not receive an income tax certificate from your company as your employer, especially since you probably did not have to pay any income tax through the company until January 1, 1935. You were presumably considered a “freelancer” in 1934.

What is the status of your tax card? From now on, it will go back to your company as an “employer.”

If you need the book on roentgenoscopy of disperse systems that is advertised on the enclosed turquoise card from the Steinkopff Publishing House, I am willing to obtain it for you as a member of the Colloid Society.

Ebert told me that although he had traveled to Berlin to attend H’s funeral service, Bodenstein found out that members of the Society of German Chemists were not allowed to go. Hence, Bodenstein said it wasn’t possible and that’s why the others didn’t go. The ban was quickly announced, but not the mitigation. As always, “There is a method (in my madness).” Moreover, Mr. Streicher has now been passionately declared by Goebels as a “role model” in a birthday telegram.
