Am 24. März 1884 wurde Prof. Debye in Maastricht (Holland) geboren, dort besuchte er die „Hoogere Burger School“ (Oberrealschule entsprechend), welche er Sommer 1901 mit dem Reifezeugnis verließ. Dann bezog er die technische Hochschule zu Aachen, wo Prof. Debye Ende 1905 die Prüfung eines Diplom-Ingenieurs elektrotechnischer Richtung bestand. Von Anfang 1905 bis Oktober 1906, war er in Aachen Assistent für Mechanik; von Oktober 1906 bis April 1911 in München Assistent für theoretische Physik beim dortigen Professor für dieses Fach, Herrn Prof. Sommerfeld. Juli 1908 promovierte er in München zum Dr. phil., Juli 1910 habilitierte sich Prof. Debye dortselbst fuer Physik. April 1911 wurde er hierher berufen für theoretische Physik an Stelle des Herrn. Prof. Einstein, welcher einen nach Prag angenommen hatte.

Professor Debye was born in Maastricht (Holland) on March 24, 1884, where he attended the “Hoogere Burger School" (equivalent to a vocational school), from which he graduated in the summer of 1901 with a high school diploma. He attended the Technical University in Aachen, where at the end of 1905, Professor Debye passed the examination to become a qualified engineer specializing in electrical engineering. From early 1905 to October 1906, he was an assistant for mechanics in Aachen. From October 1906 to April 1911, he was an assistant in Munich to a local professor of theoretical physics, Professor Sommerfeld. In July 1908, he received his doctorate in Munich. In July 1910, Professor Debye completed his habilitation there in physics. In April 1911, he accepted an appointment as a professor of theoretical physics to replace Professor Einstein, who had accepted a position in Prague.
