Claude Louis Berthollet (1748-1822) was a French chemist who is recognized for his work on chemical nomenclature and the theory of chemical equilibria. Berthollet was additionally active in French politics and a member of many prestigious scientific associations, including the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of London, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
