This prototype was designed by Beckman Instruments' Advanced Technology Operations (ATO) for NASA in 1974 for measuring the carbon dioxide inside space suit helmets. It was intended for use in manned spaceflight missions involving an Advanced Extravehicular Mobility Unit and an infrared carbon dioxide monitoring device. As of 1976 this device was scheduled to be deemed "flight qualified" pending a reduction in volume and weight.
