Nehmen Sie herzlichen Dank für Ihre liebenswürdigen Glückwünsche. Das Doktorjubiläum fiel in eine schwere Zeit, die eine richtige Feier nicht zuliess. Dies schadet nicht viel, denn es hätte doch im besten Falle nur eine matte Wiederholung des schönen Festes vor zwei Jahren werden können. Aber es macht mir Freude, dass freundliche Worte, welche Sie mir damals gewidmet haben, jetzt in klassisches Latein übersetzt, auf meinem erneuerten Doktordiplom prangen.
Haben Sie nicht einmal wieder Gelegenhait mich hier zu besuchen? Ich bin seit Kriegsausbruch nicht mehr nach Karlsruhe gekommen

und scheue mich immer noch vor der Reise. Hoffentlich geht es Ihnen und Ihrer Familie nach Umständen gut. Wir müssen auch zufrieden sein.

Dear Colleague,
Thank you very much for your gracious well-wishes. The doctoral jubilee occurred at a difficult time, which did not allow for a real celebration. This doesn't matter too much, because at the very least, it would have only been a boring repetition of the wonderful festival held two years ago. However, I am grateful that the kind words that you bestowed upon at the time are now translated into classical Latin and printed on my new doctoral diploma.
Do you have time to visit me here again? I haven't visited Karlsruhe since the outbreak of war.
