Letter from Georg Bredig to Max Bredig, June 23, 1939
- 1939-Jun-23
Georg Bredig (1868-1944) informs his son, Max Bredig (1902-1977), of his moving preparations in Karlsruhe, Germany and expresses dismay and uncertainty about his future. Georg intends to emigrate to the United States to live with Max but is only permitted to depart by ship from the Netherlands. Georg would eventually follow this plan, and eventually arrived in New York City in early 1940.

Klrh. 23 Juni 39. / No Mx 90.
Dein Vater

Karlsruhe, June 23, 1939 / No Max 90
By mistake, I didn't place this letter in today's envelope.
Dear Max,
Thank you very much for your letter from June 11th addressed to Marianne, which she received on June 21st. She also received your card from June 2nd and June 10th. I wrote you the Mx No 88 letter on June 2nd and the Mx No 89 letter on June 11th. Please confirm their arrival. I wrote and still always write c/o Vanadium Corporation, N.Y., Lexington, because I don't know if you’re keeping your apartment on Cabrini Boulevard. Hopefully, you will continue to endure the summer climate. It’s hot again already. Perhaps it’s not as warm in Pittsburgh. If you still visit with the Fajans, please give them my warm regards. Thank you very much for the phone numbers. What is J. Alexander’s exact address: East or West? On June 20th, Aunt Vally and Aunt Ida, who had been visiting here for some time, left again. It was an incredibly sad farewell for everyone because Aunt V. is quite lonely (she will probably have to leave K. very soon). Aunt Ida is also especially worried about We. and her family because they are so poor and don’t have an affidavit or any prospect to find work here or elsewhere. We are also very busy here with preparing to move. This is a very difficult task at the moment. In addition, many other things are consuming the strength of all three of us. Sometimes I fear that Marianne will overwork herself. However, she is surprisingly capable and resourceful. Whether I or the others will be able to leave here before September 1st is still uncertain. For now, I can only go to Holland, especially since I do not currently a travel permit for England. Perhaps the guarantee of financial support from you and the Society of Protection are not sufficient at all? Mr Tr. is therefore looking for another subsidy from for me to receive. However, all of this still very problematic for me and only Holland remains accessible at the moment. You can imagine how infinitely difficult everything will be for me as I turn 71 years old.
Of course, we thought a lot about you on June 20th. Just stay healthy! You will otherwise be successful! I can’t accept a university position because of my age, outdated scientific knowledge, and complete ignorance of the English language. I only go out because Marianne doesn’t want to leave me alone. Otherwise, I lay down to sleep on the bed. I deserve the rest. However, don't let this complaint disappoint you. I want to try to be brave.
Warm regards from all of us,
Father

Fortunately, Viktor’s tranquility is a great comfort to us.
