Letter from Georg Bredig to Max Bredig, September 25, 1937
- 1937-Sep-25
Georg Bredig (1868-1944) sends Max Bredig (1902-1977) updated revisions to information mentioned in a previous letter and requests that Max not send him any excess money before his emigration to the United States. Georg additionally reminds his son to say farewell to several aunts.
Max Bredig had recently been warned that his company, the Bavarian Nitrogen Works, would fire employees of Jewish descent. As a result, he decided to accept a fellowship offer in 1937 to work with his former mentor, Kasimir Fajans (1887-1975), at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Max Bredig counted as one of the approximately 282,000 German citizens of Jewish descent who left Germany by 1939 before mass deportations of European Jews to ghettos and concentration camps began in late 1941. Many of Max Bredig's family members, including his sister, Marianne Homburger (1903-1987), and brother-in-law, Viktor Homburger (1888-1968), were deported in October 1941 to the Gurs concentration camp in France.

Mein Lieber Max-Albert!

Karlsruhe, September 25, 1937, in the morning / Mx 40.
Dear Max-Albert,
In my letter Mx 39a from yesterday, please confirm the following:
On page 1, Marianne already sent you two copies of the list of the container contents AMX 1,000-1,004 with my letter Mx 38 on September 21, 1937. Steffelin also forwarded the same list here to give to the American Express Company. Hence, Marianne no longer needs to give the list to you, since you already have it.
On page 2, line 3, it says 18,049.54 Reichsmarks instead of 1,859.53 Reichsmarks.
On page 2 in paragraph 7, it says “to your” instead of “yours too.”
Discuss all the points in letter Mx 39a with Viktor soon, above all the possibility of giving him and Marianne general power of attorney for you, especially if I am unable to do it. Otherwise, such a power of attorney would be useful to avoid delays. Yesterday (Friday), Marianne and Viktor left here for Berlin.
Discuss with Marianne how you can appropriately say goodbye to Aunt Ida, Aunt Vally (and Aunt Fraenze and Toni), possibly through Marianne or later in writing, e.g., from the ship. You should especially treat Aunt Ida and Aunt Vally with kindness.
Warm regards to everyone,
Father

Regarding point 16 in my letter Mx 39a, I should amend this to say that you should preferably not send any excess money that you cannot take with you to me or to my postal checking account. Instead, it would probably be better to deposit it in your new account “Dr. Max Albert Bredig” at Strauss & Company in Karlsruhe. It will then be added to your credit here.
