Dodson was an American scientist and the founding chairman of Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Chemistry Department. In addition to his professional duties and scientific research, Dodson engaged in a number of extracurricular activities within the scientific community. Over the course of his career, he held leadership roles with several scientific organizations, including the United States Atomic Energy Commission and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
