Founded by Read Holliday (1809-1889) in 1830, Read Holliday & Sons was the leading dye-making firm in Yorkshire up to the First World War. The firm began as a manufacturer of ammonia products for use in the wool industry. In the 1860s, Holliday transitioned the firm into the dyestuffs industry by producing an aniline dye, magenta, followed by other synthetic dyes as the company developed.
