The meteorite was first discovered in 1906 in Sweden. It is thought to be the oldest meteorite discovered. The inside of the meteorite shows Widmanstätten patterns, which are formed by an extremely slow cooling rate over millions of years.
The Muonionalusta meteorite does not have a single chemical formula. Its metallic composition includes a significant percentage of iron and nickel, along with trace amounts of other elements such as cobalt, manganese, gallium, and germanium.
