August Wilhelm von Hofmann was born on April 8, 1818. He studied under Justus von Liebig (1803-1873) and was the mentor of Fritz Haber (1868-1934) and William Henry Perkin (1838-1907). He was an organic chemist specializing in aniline and naptha. The Hofmann rearrangement, the Hofmann elimination, and the Hofmann–Löffler reaction were all the results of his research. He died on May 5, 1892.
