Portrait of John Francis Queeny (1859-1933), founder of the Monsanto Company, and dog. A 30-year veteran of the nascent pharmaceutical industry, Queeny founded the Monsanto Company in St. Louis, Missouri in 1901. Monsanto initially specialized in commodity food additives like artificial sweeteners and, under the leadership of Queeny's son Edgar Monsanto Queeny (1897-1968), gradually evolved into a global agrochemical and agricultural biotechnology corporation.
