The liniment was first produced in 1861 in Chicago by former magician John Austin Hamlin (1837-1908) and his brother Lysander Butler Hamlin (1839-1910), it was primarily sold for rheumatic pain and sore muscles but was also advertised as a treatment for a number of more serious ailments including pneumonia, cancer, diphtheria, and hydrophobia.
