Bodenstein was a German physical chemist who is considered to be one of the founders of chemical kinetics. He was first to postulate a chain reaction mechanism and that explosions are branched chain reactions, later applied to the atomic bomb. In 1893, he received his Ph.D. from the University of Heidelberg where he studied with Victor Meyer (1848-1897). From 1900-1906, Bodenstein lectured at the University of Leipzig.
