Dow as head of the Midland Chemical Company, 1891-1893. The Midland Chemical Company was Dow's second commercial venture, and its aim was to produce bromine commercially from brine wells in Midland, Michigan. An advertisement for the Dow Air Battery is pasted on the first letter in the book. The company was absorbed by the Dow Chemical Company in 1897.
This letter copying book contains copies of letters written by Dow to various business associates and customers. The method for doing so involved placing the original letter under a sheet of moistened copy paper and pressing it so that some of the ink was transferred from the original to the copy paper. This resulted in a legible copy although it was lighter than the original and has a tendency to fade over time. Pages digitized as blanks are placeholders representing missing or ripped pages in the original notebook. Loose material held within the album have been photographed separately.
