Lieber Vater!

Anbei sende ich Euch heute den grössten Teil der gewünschten Bescheinigungen. Das sind:

1) je zwei Exemplare der Bestätigung der Ann Arbor Bank über mein Konto, für American sowohl wie für British Consul.

2) je ein Exemplar einer Bestätigung meiner Firma über Gehalt.

3) zwei Exemplare einer Bestätigung meiner Lebensversicherung. Da ich diese erst Mitte Januar perfekt gemacht hatte, habe ich sie noch nicht in den Affidavits für den Amerikanischen Consul und auch noch nicht im Brief an Ernst C. erwähnen können, sondern erst in dem Brief an den Englischen Consul! Ich würde aber empfehlen, Photocopien von der Bestätigung meiner Firma an den Amerikanischen Consul machen, wer weiss, ob nicht noch mehr davon gebraucht werden, und es ist mir nicht so sehr angenehm, öfter darum zu bitten. (Wenn Ihr wollt, natürlich auch von den andern beiden Papieren).

Leider kann ich noch nicht die Bescheinigung der Regierung über meine Bonds beilegen, weil ich noch keine Antwort aus Washington habe. Vielleicht kommt sie noch bis morgen früh, wenn ich den Brief absende, sonst schicke ich sie nach. Ich wollte die einzige schnelle Beförderungsmöglichkeit, mit der “Aquitania”, der nächsten Zeit, nicht ungenutzt vergehen lassen. Bei der Post sagten sie sogar, Washington schickte diese Bestätigung, direkt an die Consuln, was ich aber nicht glaube! Wenn das Schwierigkeiten machen sollte, verkaufe ich einfach rasch die Bonds wieder, was ohne jeden Verlust möglich ist, und lasse mir das Barkonto bestätigen. Aber es wird wohl auch anders noch klappen.

Die Berichte lauten ja jetzt etwas hoffnungsvoller. – Kann jetzt etwa doch der Gmelin-Kraut, Ullmann, Zeitschriften etc. möglicherweise gehalten werden? Oder ist Verkauf schon erfolgt? Angesichts der Notwendigkeit des Sparens hier, ist doch auch an Mitnahme von Euern gebr. Möbeln, wenn möglich, zu denken, Betten, Tische, Schränke, Stühle? Klavier (wenn repariert)? Werden denn auf Grund der in Aussicht stehen den neuen Bestimmungen noch Ausfuhrabgaben für die beantragte Sendung gemacht werden müssen? Oder ist es noch gar nicht so weit? Nun, das sind ja Dinge, die Ihr allein entscheiden müsst.

Mir geht es soweit ordentlich, ich arbeite viel und vorerst nur sehr vorbereitend und informatorisch. Ich vermisse sehr, keine Möglichkeit zu experimenteller Arbeit zu haben und auch nicht sobald in Aussicht zu haben. Bald wird mein Chef aus Florida zurückkommen, dann wird sich entscheiden müssen, ob ich hier bleibe, was ziemlich wahrscheinlich ist, oder nach New York ziehe, was mir wesentlich lieber wäre! Mein hiesiger “Stiefchef” ist ein guter Bekannter von Dr. Benno Straus(s), früherem sehr bekannten Metallurgen in Essen. Kennst Du zufällig seinen Namen oder kannst (Du) seine

derzeitige Privatadresse in Erfahrung bringen. Aber es ist nicht so wichtig, nur wenn ohne möglich. Ich weiss sonst nichts über Dr. S. – Der hiesige Herr möchte nur wissen, wie es ihm geht, und deswegen an ihn schreiben.

Ich wüsste gerne wie es vielen unserer Verwandten und Freunde geht wage aber nicht an sie zu schreiben, aus Furcht, die Auskunft möge eine traurige sein. Und ich kann ja doch nicht viel helfen, oder eigentlich nichts. Ich werde sehr froh sein, wenn alles mit Euch gut klappt, und ich hoffe sicher, dass das der Fall sein wird. Ist inzwischen das Warburgsche Affidavit eingetroffen?

Dear Father,

I am sending you the majority of the requested documents today. These are:

1) Two copies each of the confirmation from the Ann Arbor Bank of my account, for both the American and British Consul.

2) A copy of a salary confirmation from my company.

3) Two copies of a confirmation of my life insurance. Since I only completed this in mid-January, I have not yet been able to mention it in the affidavits for the American Consul or in the letter to Ernst C. I only mentioned it in the letter to the English Consul! I would recommend, however, making photocopies of my company’s confirmation for the American Consul. Who knows if more of these might be needed, and I don’t feel comfortable asking for them again (of course, if you all want, also make photocopies of the other two documents).

Unfortunately, I still can’t enclose the government’s certificate of my bonds because I haven’t received a reply from Washington yet. Perhaps it will arrive by tomorrow morning when I send the letter off. Otherwise, I’ll forward it. I didn’t want to let the only fast transport opportunity (with the “Aquitania”) go unused in the near future. At the post office, they even said that Washington sent this confirmation directly to the consuls, which I don’t believe! If that causes problems, I will simply sell the bonds quickly, which can be done without any loss, and have the cash account confirmed. However, it will probably work out differently.

The reports are now a little more hopeful. Can you possibly keep the Gmelin-Kraut, Ullmann, and journals? Or have they already been sold? In view of the need to save money here, it is also important to consider taking your furniture with you, such as beds, tables, cabinets, chairs, and the piano (if repaired). Given the prospect of new regulations, will export duties still have to be paid for the shipment that you applied for? Or is it not that far along yet? Well, those are things that you all have to decide independently.

I’m doing well so far. I work a lot and for the time being, it is very preparatory and informational. I really miss not having the opportunity to do experimental work and not having any prospects of this anytime soon. My boss will return from Florida soon and will then have to decide whether I will stay here, which is quite likely, or move to New York, which I would very much prefer! My local supervisor is a good friend of Dr. Benno Strauss, the previously well-known metallurgist in Essen. Do you know his name?

Or can you find out his current home address? However, this is not very important (only if possible). I don’t know anything else about Dr. S. The gentleman here would just like to know how he is doing and write to him.

I would like to know how many of our relatives and friends are doing, but I dare not write to them for fear that the news may be sad. Moreover, I can’t help much or at all. I will be very happy if everything goes well for you, and I certainly hope that will be the case. Has Warburg’s affidavit arrived in the meantime?
